So you’ve decided to go to a Chiropractor, but you are unsure of what to expect. Don’t worry. It’s a common concern.
We want to help put you at ease by sharing with you a few things to expect from your first visit to our office.
A visit starts with a review of a patient’s history. This includes not only pre-existing medical conditions and family medical history, but also the history of the particular condition that brought you to the chiropractor in the first place, i.e. when pain started, where it is located, what worsens or makes it better, etc.
Dr. Adams will then complete a physical examination to evaluate your condition. This could include blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature and range of motion, posture and other evaluations.
Depending on your condition, you may have to undergo diagnostic studies. Common ones include X-ray, MRI, CT or laboratory tests.
Following the prior steps, your chiropractor will determine a diagnosis for your problem and recommend an appropriate treatment plan, whether it is treatment that should be carried out by another healthcare professional or at the chiropractor’s office. If it is determined that the Doctor of Chiropractic should be the one to administer care for your diagnosis, you may receive your first adjustment on the first visit if appropriate.
An adjustment involves the chiropractor using his or her hands or an instrument to manipulate your joints to ultimately help reduce pain.
In addition to adjustments, other chiropractic treatments could include therapeutic ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation, ice or heat, disc decompression, laser treatments and rehabilitative stretches and exercises, among others.
The length of your treatment will vary from patient to patient, and you may also be instructed to complete certain procedures or exercises at home away from the office.
